When asked just say you're a delivery guy to the room. It works for me. Not my idea but good to share. Another thing is be nice/polite to the receptionist when being asked for ID and your can smoothly refuse it.

Adding on.. Tho I'm not a fan of hotels in the area coz of towels and room size issue. So far haven't been asked to register. Could be due to being lucky too.
Anyway, I try to blend in by considering the perspective of guests staying at the hotel instead. So dressing wise, I wear like normal/average wear (tshirt, shorts, slipper) like what most of the guests will wear. If you wear nice nice (eg. Work attire like shirt, pants), sure stand out because the hotels wouldn't have such people around usually.
Then I would also either tabao food/snacks and water usually.. So when I go in, it looks like I'm going back to my room to makan. Another thing is don't use the phone as you go into the hotel. Often I see many keep looking at the phone as they head up, sure sus la. Memorise the instructions and head up confidently. If really need phone, then at least pretend you're on the call. Then once in lift, can put down to see instructions again.
Of course above not foolproof la, so if counter still ask you to register, then guai guai do so. HP number you can give fake, just jumble up last 2 or 3 digits.
