Which farang's blog was it? Must b his attitude very "guan tin" (aka kwai lan) if not foreigners are most welcomed as long as you dun get too rowdy or do anything stupid. Have other farang forums & blogs but nothing hostile towards non-Thais.
The MMS and captains should be able to speak a fair bit of English because have many foreigners patronizing the place. My Thai is also so-so, important is not be shy and just speak. Remember a few key words should be sufficient and on top of sign & body language the most important is “jiang chua dii" or "talk paper numbers"
