I am not Thai but I do this too.
The main reason is I am super lazy. I dun want to get into the taxi and tell the driver where I want to go but the driver does not want to go to the location and I have to get out.

50THB different and no one will stop u. The so called traffic control will chase the taxi driver away once the passenger has alight.
