Imagine you are the CEO of a charity and you have 1,800 recipients. Each patient medical treatment is $3,000 per year. Therefore if you want to do good work and you give freely and fully to these 1,800, you will need $5.4 million a year.

That is all you need.

If you have $200 million in cash right now and if you close shop, it can last 37years.

There are altogether 4 ratios a person can use to see how effectively an organization is run. Forget about audit reports - a company can be audited for many many years.

There 4 ratios are:

(1) How much of the moneys are actually received by the recipients? If you give $1, how much does the recipient get. Do your own estimation - better than relying on others.

(2) What is the amount of self-funding the organization has? In this case, if that organization puts the whole $200 million in the bank at 2% interest, than it will only need another $1.4 million a year - which is peanuts.

(3) What is proportion of money given to fund-raisers. I asked a fund-raiser of a different charity this question and he said 100%. But the charity give him back 60%.

(4) What is the proportion of admin and operational expenses to income net of fund-raising? I believe that it has been set at 30 to 35%.

To this, perhaps in context of a particular nation, we should a fifth ratio:

(5) How many times the CEO sue people? Is he trying to hide anything? He may glitter but his heart is not of gold.

Another point to ask is if this is a charity endorsed by the government or is it a charity operating as a company limited by guarantee. The degree of accountability is different.

People say patients may die if you do not donate. If they do not have money, then the patients may die, so they have to plan. Well, they need only 75% of $5.4m. How much of the CEO's salary and related business ventures are causing patients to die?

This ratio analysis can be applied to every organization that you are donating to. And I mean every. If they do not want to give the information, then keep your money. It is after your money.

Along the streets, you may find an old woman rummaging through the dust-bins along with her grand-daughter, a young kid around 8 years old. Give to her and people like her. I saw this scene yesterday and in my heart, I cried. Give them dignity and hope. Keep your donations to those who need them.
